Abyss Vase: Discover a uniquality from the depths
Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and immerse yourself in the unknown. Freediving inspired our Art Director Jan Plecháč when creating this one-of-a-kind vase. Those who love the depths found below the water’s surface are inspired not only by the tension present there but also by the inner peace and harmony. And that perfectly describes our newest piece, the Abyss vase.
Abyss embodies the dynamics between enormous pressure and meditative lightness by contrasting the organically shaped core and the sharply cut, brutalist edges. The vase’s core is shaped by the glassmaker’s breath, making every piece unique, where the object’s atmosphere is then highlighted by the remarkable matte surface.
Limited edition for those brave enough to go beyond what’s possible
The molten mass weighs an unbelievable twenty-two kilos on the glassmaker’s blowpipe. That’s why making it requires not only extraordinary physical strength but also years of experience and handicraft. These attributes make the Abyss vase the most demanding object produced in our glassworks. So it should come as no surprise that it’s only available in a limited series of 99 pieces.
Success at Milano Design Week
This new work of art had its premiere at a highly prestigious place. The famous Italian curator, Rossana Orlandi, chose it for her gallery and presented it to the world as part of Milano Design Week. Known as the “Queen of Design”, Orlandi was astonished by the courage of Moser glassmakers, who ventured into creating something so ambitious. And the audience was just as enthused.
Dive into a new era
Of course, Abyss isn’t only a symbol of human courage, willpower, and desire for the transcendent, but it also symbolises a new era for the glassworks. An era started with the arrival of Jan Plecháč as the new Art Director.
What does the author himself have to say about his work? “For me personally, Abyss is the embodiment of overcoming human capabilities and pushing boundaries. When making the vase, the glassmaker is under enormous pressure, similar to that of the ocean depths. One small mistake and everything’s ruined.”
Jan Plecháč
The designer and current Art Director of Moser studied architecture at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he met Henry Wielgus. In 2011, they founded a successful studio together. They were co-creators until 2019, won several international and domestic awards, and signed their names under some world-class projects. They designed works for the Danish brand Menu, the Italian brand Cappellini, and the Czech brands Bomma and Lasvit. He’s worked at Moser since the spring of 2022, and his goal is to get Moser glass out of display cases and back into our everyday lives.
