I want to take Moser out of the showcases, says Jan Plecháč, our art director
Honza Plecháč, Moser's art director, likes to play with details. But don't expect excessive ornamentation; his concept is more about contrast with simplicity.
That's why in Honza's studio, a richly decorated, topaz Maharani glass stands next to the minimalist Solaris drinks set, while the contemporary Montagne vase is a counterbalance to the century-old design of the Eternity vase. Honza simply puts things in a new context. This makes classic pieces look really fresh in a modern, almost ascetic space. We interviewed him about how to bring an element of surprise to traditional moser glass.
Which colour of crystal do you prefer?
A combination of topaz and aquamarine. It might seem like a mismatch. But then you put them side by side and you see the opposite.
If you had to choose one drink collection for the studio, which would it be and why?
It would definitely be Mozart. It's delicate, it's perfectly shaped. Look at the little shot glass, it's just fantastic. Elegant, clean, yet decorative.
What about the Maharani? I see it here too.
The Maharani collection is very ornate, but in a modern context, it's understated. My favourite is the little spirit glass on a topaz-coloured stem. It would be great to give the client the option to buy the whole collection in crystal and then two glasses, like the small shot glass just now, in color, for example. It's things like this that have the potential to take Moser out of the shop windows, to bring it back into everyday life.
Did you buy anything from Moser before you became creative director?
We've had a yellow Four Seasons vase by Jiří Šuhájek in our house for about 15 years. It's not on a shelf somewhere, we use it for flowers. In my opinion, things should be part of our lives, to illustrate their atmosphere.
How do you do it when you create? Do you prefer peace and a clean desk, or creative clutter?
Well, I'm clear on that. Peace and a clean desk. And if you look around my studio, it's quite obvious.
