Moser at Designblok 2024

The Moser Glassworks art installation "Born of Sand" presents a new creation by Jan Plecháč at this year's Designblok

1 October 2024, Karlovy Vary – Moser, the traditional Czech manufacturer of hand-blown glass, will present itself at this year's Designblok (2–6 October 2024) in the exclusive space of the Prague Castle Riding School. With its installation "Born of Sand", it will pay tribute to the primary source of glass art – sand. The exhibition will also première the new vase "Drop", which, like the art installation itself, was created based on a design by Jan Plecháč, the glassworks art director.

A Tribute to the Art of Glassmaking

Moser's installation is a tribute to the origin of the art of glassmaking – sand, which transforms into crystal beauty in the hands of masters. The monumental block of sand, which dominates the space, symbolises the power and potential hidden within every grain of this raw material. It is the foundation upon which the entire craft of glassmaking is built. As the block gradually disintegrates it reveals its fragility, as well as its playful spirit, referencing childhoods filled with sandcastles and sand cakes. The installation includes selected crystal artworks designed by Moser's art director Jan Plecháč, which embody the new, fresh era of Moser. It is also the première of his new creation – the vase "Drop". For the time being, objects shrouded in mystery are encased in sand, stimulating curiosity about what Moser has planned next, while also recalling the childlike joy of discovery, imagination, and the desire to create and experiment. The installation thus marries monumentality with playfulness, and shows that all great stories begin with a tiny grain of inspiration.

A Magical Moment Captured in Crystal

"A new creation made specifically for this year's Designblok, the Drop vase captures a drop of water the moment before it hits the ground. Its shape reflects the fragile beauty of nature and is a tribute to natural simplicity, and at the same time a bold step into the world of geometric purity. It lends the space something of the evanescent beauty of everyday life," says its designer, Jan Plecháč.

The hand-blown Drop vase is a masterpiece of Moser's glassmakers. Their skill and virtuoso mastery of demanding glassmaking techniques gave rise to an object in two colour shades. Each piece is unique, cut to perfection by demanding flatbed grinding. Thanks to its thoughtful design and precise workmanship, light flows through each vase like a real drop of water, creating impressive valences. It is produced in two colour variants. The clear crystal drop carries with it the tenderness and purity of a drop of morning dew. Beryl layered with smoke resembles a raindrop falling through velvet darkness.
