Filip Dobias
A graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and a laureate of the Ludwig Moser Award in 2014
Filip Dobias belongs to the youngest generation of glass designers (* 1990). He began his design journey at the age of 19 at the Applied Arts Secondary Vocational School of Glassmaking in Valašské Meziříčí, later attending the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under the guidance of Academy Scholar Prof. Rony Plesl. His love of the craft took him all the way to Japan, where in 2013, he completed a prestigious fellowship at the Toyama Institute of Glass Art. After returning to Valašské Meziříčí, he became a teacher at the same school he once attended, and only a few years later, received an offer he couldn’t refuse: become a designer at the French brand De Bournais, partner to the famous Roche Bobois furniture-making company. This tenure catapulted him into worldwide design fairs and further strengthened his conviction that precise handicraft is his true calling. Today, Filip lives and creates in Vsetín and Valašské Meziříčí, where he and master glasscutter David Gábera founded their own glassmaking studio Crystal Brothers Ateliers. His works gradually unfolded from expressive paintings to photographic projects and even installations, whether as part of school project displays or designer shows. Glistening colourfulness and a refined cut are characteristic of his creations, both of which are on full display in the Cinque Torri Collection.
“Working with glass enchanted me. There was some kind of magic to it, something personally unexplored for me.”
